DMC&H hosts organ donation awareness programme

DMC&H Ludhiana, in collaboration with SOTTO Punjab, organised an Organ Donation Awareness Programme today with the primary aim of busting myths around organ donation and honouring the families of donors for their noble contribution in giving the gift of life. The event also highlighted the urgent need to strengthen the culture of pledging for organ donation within the community.

Ludhiana, August 18, 2026: DMC&H Ludhiana, in collaboration with SOTTO Punjab, organised an Organ Donation Awareness Programme today with the primary aim of busting myths around organ donation and honouring the families of donors for their noble contribution in giving the gift of life. The event also highlighted the urgent need to strengthen the culture of pledging for organ donation within the community.
 Over the last 18 months in 2026, DMC&H has successfully carried out 17 cadaveric donations. The institute has performed 61 liver transplants, 30 kidney transplants, and 20 (10 pair) of corneal transplants, marking a significant contribution towards saving and transforming lives.
The event was graced by Himanshu Jain, Deputy Commissioner, Ludhiana, as the Chief Guest. Dr. Vijay Tadia, Nodal Officer, ROTTO, delivered the keynote address, while Dr. Ramandeep Kaur, Civil Surgeon, Ludhiana,  Dr. Gagneen Sandhu, Nodal Officer, SOTTO, and Harpreet Singh, Vice Chairman, CT University, were the Guests of Honour.
The event was a joint initiative of the Departments of Liver Transplant, Nephrology, Urology & Renal Transplant, and Ophthalmology. The event was attended by Bipin Gupta, Secretary, DMC&H Managing Society; Mukesh Verma, Treasurer, DMC&H Managing Society; Dr. G.S. Wander, Principal, DMC&H; Dr Sandeep Kaushal, Dean Academics, Dr. Sandeep Sharma and Dr. Ashwani K. Chaudhary, Medical Superintendents; Dr. Vikas Makkar, Professor & Head, Department of Nephrology; Dr. Gurvinder Kaur, Professor & Head, Department of Ophthalmology; Dr. P.L. Gautam, HOD, Critical Care Medicine, Dr Gursagar Singh Sahota, Chief Liver Transplant Surgeon, and Dr Sangam Papneja, Associate Consultant, Liver Transplant.
Families of organ donors were felicitated in recognition of their selfless decision to save lives. To create awareness, students of DMC&H presented a skit and a reel highlighting the importance of organ donation.
In his message, Himanshu Jain, IAS, Deputy Commissioner, Ludhiana, urged students from schools, colleges and universities to come forward and actively participate in promoting organ donation. He encouraged every individual to educate at least 10 people about the importance of organ donation and appealed to the audience to spread awareness and inspire more people to pledge their organs, thereby helping save precious lives.
Addressing the audience, Bipin Gupta, Secretary, DMC&H Managing Society, remarked, “DMC&H has always been at the forefront of serving humanity. By honouring the families of donors, we are not only expressing our gratitude but also inspiring society to come forward and support this noble cause. Organ donation truly reflects the highest form of service to mankind.”
Speaking on the occasion, Principal, DMC&H, Dr. G.S. Wander welcomed all the dignitaries and emphasised that organ donation is not only a medical service but also a noble humanitarian act that gives hope and a new lease of life to patients suffering from end-stage organ failure.
In his keynote address, Dr. Vijay Tadia, Nodal Officer, ROTTO, highlighted the crucial role of donor families, whose selfless decision to donate organs can give a new lease of life to others. He also explained the key steps involved in organ donation and emphasised the importance of collaborative efforts between SOTTO and ROTTO in promoting organ donation and strengthening the transplantation system.
The audience was deeply moved when Dr. Gursagar Singh Sahota, Chief Liver Transplant Surgeon, DMC&H, shared the heartfelt story of Dr. Tejinder Pal Singh, Assistant Professor, Department of Anaesthesia, DMC&H, who is the son of an organ donor. Dr. Tejinder Singh shared his personal experience and thoughts, highlighting the emotions, courage and humanity behind the decision to donate organs.
The event witnessed the participation of over 200 attendees, who were urged to spread awareness within their communities and motivate others to come forward and register as organ donors.
