Cultivation Of Mentha Crop Is On Rise In Punjab

Chandigarh, December 8, 2015: The total production of Mentha crop in the form of Oil has touched 2430 MT in Punjab during the Year 2014-15. Total average yield of the crop is 183 Kg. per hectare and total area under Mentha crop is 13277 hectare in the state.
Disclosing this here today an official spokesperson of the Horticulture Department said that the cultivation of Mentha, which among others was being projected by the state Agricultural Department as an alternative to wheat and paddy crop, is on the rise. He said that many farmers have switched over to the Mentha crop as it is ensuring more income per acre as compared to the wheat.
He said that in Moga 4100 hectare area was under its cultivation and yield was 202 Kg per hectare while production was 828 MT in terms of Oil. In district Jalandhar 2915 hectare area has been covered with yield of 181 Kg per hectare. Similarly, in Ferozepur 2106 hectare area was under mentha production with 164 Kg yield per hectare and Oil production to the tune of 370 MTs. Ludhiana has 2085 hectares under it with yield to the tune of 176 Kg. per hectare and with the production of 367 MTs. Likewise, in Kapurthala 911 hectare area has been covered, the yield is 171Kg. per hectare and the production is 156 MTs of Oil. Interest in mentha farming has also been shown by farmers of Hoshiarpur, S.B.S Nagar( Nawanshahr), Bhatinda, Sri Fatehgarh Sahib and Tarn Taran districts.
