Congress and AAP Governments Have Completely Failed to Deliver Justice to the Sangat - Brahmpura
Welcomes Strict Law Against Sacrilege, Calls AAP’s New Bill a “Political Stunt” Exposed by Police Data
Tarn Taran, April 13, 202: Senior Shiromani Akali Dal leader, former MLA from Khadoor Sahib and constituency in-charge Ravinder Singh Brahmpura on Monday termed the new amendment bill on sacrilege passed in the Punjab Assembly as an attempt by the Bhagwant Mann-led government to cover up its administrative failures and a mere “election stunt”.
In a statement issued here, Brahmpura said that while the Shiromani Akali Dal fully supports the enactment of the strictest possible laws in cases of sacrilege, the government must not hide its failures behind legislation and should present the ground reality before the people of Punjab.
Citing recent data from Punjab Police and the Bureau of Investigation, Brahmpura stated that out of 597 sacrilege cases registered since 2015, convictions have been secured in only 44 cases—merely 7 per cent. He expressed concern that nearly 70 per cent of the cases failed not due to lack of laws, but because of weak investigation, hostile witnesses, and lack of evidence.
He said that for nearly a decade, Punjab has been governed by the Congress and the Aam Aadmi Party, yet both governments have failed to deliver justice to the Sangat.
Questioning the effectiveness of the new bill, Brahmpura asked whether merely strengthening laws on paper would improve ground-level policing. He pointed out that many cases collapse due to failure in securing timely CCTV footage and lack of forensic evidence, and questioned what concrete provisions the government has introduced to strengthen investigation and ensure witness protection.
While terming the amendment related to mentally unstable accused as appropriate, he also questioned how the new law would help in identifying and arresting the 192 accused who have not yet been identified by the police.
Brahmpura asserted that real justice will not come through legislative changes alone, but through honest intent and a strong policing system. He alleged that the new bill is a calculated attempt to mislead the public and divert attention from serious lapses in investigation, adding that the people of Punjab are fully aware of the ground reality.
