63rd Annual Sports Meet in Lyallpur Khalsa College

Students participate in tug of war in the 63rd Annual Sports Meet in Lyallpur Khalsa College, Jalandhar.

Jalandhar, February 26, 2015: Over 385 students tested their fitness and athletic skills in the 62nd Annual Athletic Meet of the Lyallpur Khalsa College today. The event saw participation students of the different wings of the College such as Arts, Sciences, Commerce, Computers, and Physiotherapy in events like 100 mts Race, Short Put Throw, Long Jump, and Relays. The Overall Trophy went to Arts group where as runner up Commerce group. Komal Rani and Rupinder Kaur were declared best athletes.

The meet was inaugurated by noted Hockey player Dhyan Chand and Dronacharya Awardee Rajinder Singh Olympian who represented India in 1984 Los Angeles Olympics in addition to many international competitions. Speaking on the occasion, the chief guest said that sports in itself was an education which inculcated in students qualities of head and heart such as discipline, sense of responsibility and quick decision making ability. He also said that it was the need of the hour to promote the participation of the youth in outdoor activities, so that the total development of their personalities could be ensured.

Welcoming the chief guest, the college Principal Dr. GS Samra said that one of the chief goals of the college was to encourage sports so that the youth could be protected from social evils like drug addiction. He specially mentioned that the playgrounds of the college had produced renowned sportsperson of the country which include former Hockey Captains Padamshree Ajitpal Singh and Padamshree Pargat Singh and also that the College has created history by winning the Teja Singh Samundari Overall Sports Championship Trophy of Guru Nanak Dev University for 12 times, out of which 11 times it had been won consecutively.

The annual sports report was read by Dr. Jaspal Singh, Head Physical Education and Sports Department. Prizes to the winners were given by the Chief Guest along with Principal who appreciated the performances of athletes in all the events. The vote of thanks was made by Dr. Simranjeet Singh Bains, Dean Sports of the College.

The occasion was made lively by the witty and running commentary by Prof G.S. Buttar and Prof. Mansi Chopra.
