Ludhiana, October 10, 2015: Department of Psychiatry today organised  'Caregivers Awareness Meet' on World Mental Health Day. World Mental Health Day is observed every year on 10 October to raise awareness about issues pertaining to mental illness. The theme for World Mental Health Day this year is "Dignity in mental Health". Dr Ranjive Mahajan   (Professor & Head of Psychiatry) informed that  people with mental illness need not to live with social stigma and should express themselves and take treatment for their diseases from the qualified psychiatrist. The meet emphasized on maintaining  dignity of patients suffering from  mental illness. The nursing students presented a role play depicting the  social stigma attached  with patients suffering from mental illnesses. Patients and their caregivers also expressed their views and experiences regarding the problems being faced by them.
It was mentioned that there are many people all over the world, who suffer from some or other form of  mental illness and are deprived of dignity and  basic human rights, including exclusion from the normal social activities.
