World Environment day celebrated at PU

Chandigarh, June 5, 2018: Horticulture Division of Panjab University, Chandigarh celebrated World Environment Day 2018 on the theme “Beat the Plastic Pollution”, here today. During the day, series of activities namely cleansing drive, cycle rally and plantation drive were organised in collaboration with Enactus Dr.SSBUICET, PU and Natural Biodiversity Society.

Er.Anil Thakur, Divisional Engineer (Hort.) informed that the cleanliness drive was carried out with the aim of making campus polythene free and 4 trolleys full of garbage were lifted from the campus. He advised the students to contribute their bit in making the campus polythene free. He further said that the Horticulture Division of Panjab University is always striving to make the campus clean and green under kind patronage and constant support from University authorities and will continue with such initiatives in future also with more enthusiasm.

A plantation drive was organized near newly built Neerja Bhanot Girls Hostel No-10 . The drive was led by Ms. Renuka Salwan, DPR PU alongwith her husband Sh. JatinSalwan who gifted 51 trees namely LagerstroemiaSpeciosa to PU which were planted on the road leading to Girls Hostel Nos. 8, 9 and 10. Horticulture Division of PU facilitated the event by providing all the logistics required.

Earlier, the Enactus team led by Prof. Seema Kapoor had customized dustbins in collaboration with Municipal Corporation, Chandigarh exclusively for the disposal of plastic bottles, installed 5 bins which were sponsored by Shri. Saurabh Mishra, Additional Commissioner, Municipal Corporation, Chandigarh. 2 were installed at Student Centre, Panjab University during the celebrations of World Environmental Day in collaboration with the Horticulture Department and NB team of PU. One bin will be set up at PU market and other 2 will be installed at Sector-17 market.

The events were attended by Prof. A.S. Ahluwalia, Secy to VC, Prof. Emanual Nahar, DSW, PU. , Prof. Neena Caplash, Dean Student Welfare(W), Wardens of various hostels, eminent faculty members Prof. M.C. Sidhu, Prof. Seema Kapoor, Prof. Tirthankar Bhattacharya and non-teaching staff and students in large numbers. The volunteers of Natural Biodiversity also participated with full enthusiasm.
