Why shouldn't African women be compensated, NHRC asks Delhi

New Delhi, May 28 (IANS) The National Human Rights Commission Wednesday asked the Delhi government why it should not provide monetary relief to the African women who were allegedly assaulted by then state law minister Somanth Bharti.

The commission also asked Delhi's police commissioner about the status of the first information report against Bharti who in January had raided the house of African women for allegedly running a "sex and drug ring".

Referring to the Justice B.L. Garg Committee report on the midnight raid, the commission said the then law minister and his supporters were involved in illegally stopping the vehicles of African women.

Both the authorities have been asked to reply in six week.

"The African women were wrongful restrained and humiliated without any fault of theirs as no drug was found from their possession," the commission said.

"They were subjected to racist slurs, assault, humiliation, misbehaviour, molestation with threats of dire consequences," the commission said.
