Mohali, January 16, 2022: Heart diseases are accounted for 30 % deaths across the globe and in India as well while lung diseases are second most common cause of illness and death nowadays among Indians, said Dr Deepak Puri , director of cardiovascular thoracic surgery at Max Hospital during a webinar on ‘management of heart & lung complications during Covid peak’ on Sunday.
He said with the onset of Covid there has been further worsening of lung complications as seen during 2nd wave.”
He revealed that during Covid peak patients usually come to tertiary hospitals very late. They usually reach hospitals with worse complications which makes treatment more complicated besides increasing the risk manifold.
Dr Puri assured that these patients can be treated safely in good tertiary hospitals where all safety measures are taken to ensure patient's recovery without the risk of contracting Covid.
He said, the lung complications like severe air leaks can be sealed with video assisted thoracic surgery. Few patients develop black fungus in lungs which can also be treated with video assisted removal of affected lung segments while preserving remaining lung.
Time is important and one should reach the hospital on time, he maintained.
