VB-G RAM G to replace MGNREGA starting July 1st: HIRD Director Dr. Chauhan

New Delhi, June 28, 2026: The formal launch ceremony of the successor scheme to MGNREGA—implemented under the VB-G RAM G Act—will take place on July 2nd in Tirupati, Andhra Pradesh. State Rural Development Ministers will join this national event, led by Union Minister for Rural Development and Farmers' Welfare Shivraj Singh Chouhan, via video conferencing from various villages.

Dr. Virender Singh Chauhan, Director of the Haryana Institute of Rural Development (HIRD), who arrived in Delhi to participate in the two-day National Rural Development Conference, shared this information with the media.

Dr. Virender Singh Chauhan stated that most states and Union Territories have completed the foundational preparations to implement the new scheme. During the National Rural Development Conference, and in the presence of Union Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, top officials from the Ministry of Rural Development reviewed the state-wise preparations for the scheme's implementation.

He noted that the new Act would come into effect on July 1st, marking the end of MGNREGA; however, each state is required to notify its own specific version and rules for the new scheme. To date, 18 states have completed this crucial step. In Haryana, the notification is scheduled to be issued by Monday.

Dr. Virender Singh Chauhan mentioned that the HIRD is continuing the training of Haryana officials and staff—who will play a pivotal role in implementing VB-G RAM G—on a war footing. This training is eventually proposed to be extended down to the district and block levels, reaching even Sarpanchs and Village Secretaries.

Addressing apprehensions regarding VB-G RAM G, Dr. Virender Singh Chauhan stated that the new scheme would provide more days of work (125 days) compared to the previous one. While the new scheme will ensure greater transparency, the government will also guarantee that the use of new technology aids workers rather than becoming an obstacle to their rights. He added that the Central Government has instructed states to ensure that not a single hour of employment entitlement is lost for any worker seeking work.
