Nature is home for us. When we protect nature, nature protects us. But many of our day-to-day activities such as cooking, cleaning, washing, travelling impact the environment in many ways. While our lives have been on pause, nature has thrived. This phase has taught us an important lesson - nurture the natural world. We cannot go back to how things were, and hence practising sustainable living becomes all the more important. Sustainable living means reducing one’s demand for natural resources and making the right choices to adopt greener practices to the best of their ability. This year, World Environment Day’s theme is ‘Ecosystem Restoration’ and &TV artists from Apla Maharashtra, Nehha Pendse aka Anita Bhabi from Bhabiji Ghar Par Hai and Akansha Sharma aka Sakina Mirza from Aur Bhai Kya Chal Raha Hai? talk about their small efforts in adopting the practice of sustainable living.

Nehha Pendse, aka Anita Bhabi in Bhabiji Ghar Par Hai, shares, “In simple parlance, sustainable living means understanding how our lifestyle choices impact the world around us and finding ways for everyone to live better and responsibly. Adopting greener practices is the way to conserve and protect our planet. For example, I have reduced single-use plastic and instead go for plastic-free alternatives for my grocery and other requirements. I make it a point to carry my cotton or jute bags. When it comes to energy, I use LED lighting or CFL bulbs instead of incandescent lighting as it is proven to last longer and saves energy. Besides, I also prefer natural lighting, which not aids in energy conservation also allows one to get to enjoy some more sunshine. These small changes in our everyday habits can make us more environmentally conscious and bring about bigger changes.”

Akansha Sharma, aka Sakina Mirza in Aur Bhai Kya Chal Raha Hai? shares, “It is critical to protect the environment and reduce the destruction of ecosystems. As the inhabitants of this planet, our moral obligation is to protect the environment from pollution and other activities that lead to environmental degradation. Our ecosystems provide us with many natural resources like clean air, water, food and much more and we must protect and give back to our environment. Vehicular pollution has been a growing concern, especially in metro cities. Therefore, I avoid using my vehicle and instead walk short distances wherever possible. I also avoid using plastic and wastage of water and other natural resources. As our giveback and gift to our mother nature, we have decided to plant one sapling every six months. There are many more things we can do for a greener and cleaner environment and let us collectively find simple ways that can help us in doing our bit for the environment.”
