Dharamshala, June 7, 2016: To boost sports in Himachal Pradesh, Anurag Thakur met tennis legend Leander Paes, yesterday evening. Thakur congratulated Leander Paes on wining the recently concluded French Open 2016. Additionally, Leander congratulated Thakur on being elected as the President, BCCI.
During the meeting, Thakur congratulated Leander Paes for his unprecedented achievements and making India proud with his laurels. Additionally, he sought for suggestions from Leander on avenues and opportunities that could be exploited to promote tennis and overall upliftment of sports in the Himachal.
Commenting on the meeting, Anurag Thakur, said, “I am extremely happy to have met Leander Paes. He is a great sportsperson and has highlighted India’s name on the world map in the field of tennis. He is born into a family of sportspersons with his father Vece Paes, a renowned Indian hockey midfielder, having represented the Indian team in the 1972 Munich Olympics. Given to his vast experience and understanding of sports fraternity, we discussed various opportunities that could be explored to give a boost to sports in Himachal Pradesh.” Anurag said in a press release that Leander has been kind enough to share various suggestions and also has proposed to share few more ideas. “I am honored with the help he is offering and I am sure that this collaborative thought process will be benefit sports promotion in the State,” added Thakur.
Leander Paes is an Indian professional tennis player who is considered to be one of the best doubles and mixed doubles players of all time. Given to his outstanding contribution to tennis in India, he has received the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna award, India's highest sporting honour, in 1996–97; the Arjuna Award in 1990; the Padma Shri award in 2001 and its 3rd Highest Civilian Award the Padma Bhushan in January 2014.
