Spot Alzheimer’s Early: Awareness Can Help Delay the Impact; PGIMS Rohtak marks World Alzheimer’s Day with awareness programme

Rohtak, September 21, 2026: The Department of Psychiatry at PGIMS, Rohtak, organised an awareness programme on World Alzheimer’s Day, featuring a poster exhibition at the OPD to educate visitors about the early signs, risk factors and prevention of Alzheimer’s disease and dementia.
Department Head Prof. Sujata Sethi said this year’s focus is on the importance of early detection of dementia. Dr Hitesh Khurana said the risk increases with age and is higher among women. Forgetfulness affecting daily life, getting lost, difficulty recognising familiar people and inability to perform routine tasks are key warning signs.
He said controllable risk factors include diabetes, high blood pressure, substance use, physical inactivity and social isolation. Regular exercise, adequate sleep, monitoring blood pressure and blood sugar, and avoiding tobacco and alcohol can help reduce risks.
Dr Jogender Kairo stressed the benefits of an active lifestyle, hobbies and mental stimulation. Dr Bhupender Singh said the Geriatric Psychiatry and Dementia Clinic is treating 20–30 patients every week.
Vice-Chancellor Dr H.K. Aggarwal and Director Dr S.K. Singhal appreciated the department’s awareness initiative.
