Chandigarh, June 6, 2025: A special lecture on "Outlines of Sikh Studies Across Spaces" was organised today by the Department of Guru Nanak Sikh Studies at Panjab University Chandigarh.
Amandeep Singh, an American Sikh scholar, delivered a special lecture on the topic. He shared an overview of the interpretations of Sikhism during the pre-colonial and post-colonial periods, highlighting their key features. He stated that the fundamental difference in Sikh studies emerged after the violence of 1947, which led to Sikhism being studied separately from its religious context and instead being linked to secular or purely moral frameworks.
Presiding over the event, Amarjit Singh Grewal stressed the importance of creating new methodologies to understand life's existence and focusing on ethics over aesthetics, as humans are increasingly inclined towards power over meaning.
Prof. Jagdish Singh emphasised the need to study Sikh traditions such as Sahajdhari, Udasi, Sewapanth, Nirmala Panth, and Khalsa Panth, collectively in Sikh studies. Dr. Manmohan suggested efforts to reconnect various communities that were once part of Sikhism with their epistemological aspects through Gurmat.
Earlier, the event began with a welcome address by Prof. Gurpal Singh Sandhu, Academic Incharge of the department.
After the lecture, a discussion was held on the topic in which Hira Singh, Gurdyal Singh, Harkamalpreet Singh, Dr. Khushhaal Singh, Dr. Praveen Kumar, and Amandeep Singh from various academic institutions shared their thoughts. During the function stage was conducted by Parmveer Singh and Dr. Sukhwinder Singh presented the vote of thanks.
