Chandigarh, September 26, 2025: The Department of Philosophy, Panjab University, in collaboration with the Department of Sociology, today organised a special lecture by Dr. Venussa Tinyi of the University of Hyderabad.

The lecture, titled “Making Sense of Obligation and Permission: Thinking Through Possible Worlds,” was held in the Seminar Hall of the Department of Sociology.

Dr. Tinyi, a distinguished scholar in philosophy with significant contributions to the study of obligation, permission, and modal logic, introduced the concept of normative logic and demonstrated logical tools for analysing normative concepts such as obligation and prohibition without relying on the idea of penalties. His presentation highlighted how modal and possible-worlds frameworks provide clarity in distinguishing between normative status and external sanctions.

The lecture was marked by clarity of exposition and intellectual depth, drawing keen interest from students, research scholars, and faculty members. The interactive discussion that followed reflected the success of the session, with participants engaging in thoughtful questions and stimulating exchanges.

The event concluded with a vote of thanks to Dr. Tinyi for his valuable contribution and to both departments for jointly facilitating an enriching academic engagement. Photographs of the lecture are attached for publication.
