Special Lecture delivered by Prof. Sanjeev Mahajan (Retd.)
The Department of Public Administration, Panjab University, Chandigarh, today organised a Special Lecture on “Empowering Governance through Social Media for Developing Capabilities” under the lecture series “Public Policy – Theory & Praxis.”
 
                        Chandigarh, October 31, 2025: The Department of Public Administration, Panjab University, Chandigarh, today organised a Special Lecture on “Empowering Governance through Social Media for Developing Capabilities” under the lecture series “Public Policy – Theory & Praxis.”
The lecture was delivered by Prof. Sanjeev Mahajan, a distinguished scholar in the field of Public Administration who recently superannuated from the Department of Public Administration, Himachal Pradesh University, Shimla. Earlier, the event commenced with a warm welcome address by Dr. Bhawna Gupta, Chairperson of the Department.
In his insightful lecture, Prof. Mahajan highlighted the growing significance of social media as a tool for participatory and responsive governance. He emphasized how digital platforms can enhance citizen engagement, transparency, and capacity development within administrative systems. Referring to his recent publication, “Interconnected World, Lost Connections,” published by Routledge, Prof. Mahajan elaborated on the increasing importance of social media and its role in empowering citizens.He further highlighted the potential of Artificial Intelligence to revolutionize governance by providing platforms for citizens to voice their concerns, participate in decision-making, and hold governments accountable. However, he also cautioned that social media can be a double-edged sword, and its effective use demands careful consideration of its limitations and associated risks.
The lecture was followed by an engaging interactive session, during which faculty members, research scholars, and students shared their views and raised pertinent questions on the role of social media in strengthening governance capabilities.
