Rohtak, May 24, 2026: On the occasion of Devarshi Narad Jayanti, the Rohtak branch of the Vishwa Samvad Kendra, Haryana, organized a seminar for journalists. Titled "Challenges for Journalism in a Changing Landscape" the seminar featured detailed discussions on various dimensions of the field.
The keynote speaker, Dr. Pawan Kumar—HoD of Communication and Media Technology at JC Bose University, Faridabad—said that the objective of nation-oriented journalism is not merely to disseminate information, but to awaken a sense of national consciousness within society and contribute positively to the process of nation-building. He emphasized that the media should prioritize constructive and positive news stories in the interest of society, as such reports instill hope, inspiration, and energy among the public.
Expressing concern over the prevalence of "fake narratives," the keynote speaker described them as attempts to mislead the public by distorting the truth or propagating falsehoods. Emphasizing the critical need for original content in journalism, he asserted that a journalist's true identity lies in their unique perspective and originality.
The Chief Guest, Mr. M.S. Duhan (retd. Deputy Director General of Doordarshan) said that true journalism consists of exposing injustice, holding those in power accountable, and conveying the truth to the public without fear or bias. He affirmed that maintaining the courage to report the truth, even in the face of adverse circumstances, constitutes the supreme duty of a journalist.
Speaking as a distinguished guest, Dr. Benul Tomar—a Professor in the Department of Journalism and Mass Communication at MDU—observed that the media serves as the fourth pillar of democracy, and its true strength lies in its credibility and its commitment to public welfare. He urged the media to remain a mirror of society rather than viewing itself as omnipotent.
In his address, District Information and Public Relations Officer Sanjeev Saini highlighted the economic challenges faced by journalists, noting that many reporters working in small and regional media organizations are struggling due to the lack of a regular salary. While providing details of the measures taken by the Haryana government—under the leadership of Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini—to safeguard the interests of journalists, he highlighted various schemes related to pensions, accreditation, and financial assistance.
In their addresses, other speakers described journalism as a powerful medium of democracy that plays a pivotal role in fostering social awareness, scrutinizing government policies, and sensitizing the general public regarding their rights and duties. Local Journalists, along with other intellectuals, were present on this occasion.
