Rohtak’s History, Heritage and Growth Captured in One Definitive Record; Revised District Gazetteer-2025 released: DC Satbir Singh

Rohtak, August 26, 2026: Deputy Commissioner Satbir Singh said the revised Rohtak District Gazetteer-2025 brings together the district’s rich history, heritage, socio-cultural traditions and development journey in an authentic and comprehensive record.

Released recently by the Revenue and Disaster Management Department, the nearly 650-page gazetteer is the 15th publication in the series of district gazetteers issued since Haryana’s formation in 1966 and the first revised edition of the Rohtak Gazetteer published in 1970. It contains 19 chapters, 72 tables in the appendices and 40 pages of colour photographs.

The gazetteer covers Rohtak’s geography, history, population, society and culture, agriculture, industry, banking, trade, transport, infrastructure, administration, law and justice, education, healthcare and tourism. It also documents the district’s transformation over the past five decades, including its emergence as a major education and healthcare hub, growth of sports infrastructure and expanding role in the National Capital Region.

From Mahabharata-era Rohitak to a modern NCR hub

According to the gazetteer, Rohtak’s ancient name was Rohitak, mentioned in the Mahabharata in connection with Nakul’s western campaign. Archaeological evidence points to ancient settlements in the region, while the historic mound of Khokhrakot is associated with remains linked to the Harappan period.

The publication traces Rohtak’s political history from the reign of Prithviraj Chauhan through Muhammad Ghori, the Delhi Sultanate, Mughals, Marathas and British rule. The merger of the Dujana princely state in 1948 and Haryana’s formation in 1966, when Rohtak was among the state’s seven original districts, are also documented.

DC Satbir Singh said the gazetteer would serve as valuable reference material for researchers, historians, planners, journalists, students and the general public. Copies will be available at the Government Press Sales Depot in Panchkula and will also be supplied to district libraries and universities across Haryana. The gazetteer will soon be made available online on the official website of the Revenue and Disaster Management Department, providing wider access to Rohtak’s history, heritage and contemporary development.
