Ludhiana, August 17, 2025: In a landmark institutional achievement, Dr. Anubhav Sharma, Consultant (Orthopedics) at Dayanand Medical College & Hospital (DMCH), Ludhiana, successfully performed a rare and complex surgery on a 4-year-old child diagnosed with Ewing’s Sarcoma — a malignant bone cancer — around the ankle region (distal fibula). This is the first time such a surgery has been performed at DMCH, marking a significant milestone for the institute.
The young patient is from an economically underprivileged family. Demonstrating exceptional commitment, Dr. Anubhav Sharma not only took up the surgical challenge but also personally mobilized financial support for the procedure by arranging donations from his friends and well-wishers.
Dr GS Wander, Principal, affirmed that Bone Cancer treatment is a part of our commitment to establish super specialist branches and bring it to the best of national and international level. He lauded Dr. Anubhav Sharma’s exceptional surgical skill, pioneering spirit, and his humanitarian gesture, calling it an inspiring example of medical excellence with a human touch.
This rare feat not only reflects DMCH’s growing capabilities in advanced orthopedic oncology surgeries but also underscores the profound impact a dedicated doctor can have in transforming a patient’s life.
The surgery was aimed at removing the cancer while preserving the child’s limb — a highly delicate and technically demanding task, especially in such a young patient. The successful outcome has given the child a chance at a full recovery and a normal life.
Speaking about the achievement, Dr. Anubhav Sharma said, “Medicine is not just about knowledge & skill, but also compassion, empathy and human values. Every child deserves a chance, and I’m glad we could make it happen here at DMCH. I express my sincere gratitude to our Secretary, Bipin Gupta and our Principal Dr Gurpreet Wander for the guidance, constant support and encouragement.”
