Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra reflects on initial struggling days, says 'had to save money for other expenses'

Critically acclaimed filmmaker Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra who is known for his prolific work with films like Rang De Basanti, Bhaag Milkha Bhaag, and more, recently attended Sahitya AajTak 2022 in Delhi. The director's session, titled Aaine Main Ajnabi is the light on his journey to stardom which he has curated and compiled in his book The Stranger in The Mirror.
RAKEYSH OMPRAKSH MEHRA REFLECTS ON INITIAL STRUGGLING DAYS
During the event, the director spoke volumes about his book and recalled his initial career days when he embarked on an ambitious journey to Mumbai. For someone who hails from Delhi and had dreams in his eyes to showcase his vision across the globe, he shared how he sojourned his journey with little money in his pocket.
Walking down memory lane, Mehra said, "I had this sanduk (box) with me which I took while travelling to Mumbai for the first time to try my luck. I remember boarding the Rajdhani train without a ticket." He jokingly added that the reason behind this activity was that he "had to save money for other expenses. So the ticket collector used to make us sit towards the end of the boggy near the toilets. Though the tickets cost 416, we used to travel in just 100 rupees," the director said.
Born and brought up in Delhi, Rakeysh's father worked for the Claridges hotel in New Delhi. He was a part of the selection camp as a swimmer in the 1982 Asian Games held in New Delhi but was not selected in the final round. He studied at Air Force Bal Bharati School in Delhi. He directed scores of television commercials for Indian and international clients. He has also directed music videos such as Aby Baby starring Amitabh Bachchan.
