Punjab State & Chandigarh UT Human Rights Commission (PSHRC) Member Jitender Singh Shunty (Padma Shri awardee) conducted a comprehensive inspection of Ludhiana Central Jail on Thursday, evaluating facilities for inmates and undertrials.

Ludhiana, October 18, 2025: Punjab State & Chandigarh UT Human Rights Commission (PSHRC) Member Jitender Singh Shunty (Padma Shri awardee) conducted a comprehensive inspection of Ludhiana Central Jail on Thursday, evaluating facilities for inmates and undertrials.

Shunty thoroughly examined the barracks, kitchen, food services, toilets, sanitation, and other amenities. He also tasted the food of the kitchen and talked with the inmates. He stressed the need for maintaining high standards of hygiene, particularly in the kitchen, where he personally assessed the quality and cleanliness of meals provided to prisoners. He toured the jail's hospital, gathering detailed information on medical services offered, including the Opioid Assisted Treatment (OOAT) clinic, Antiretroviral Therapy (ART) for HIV, tuberculosis treatment, and counselling programs. Shunty further stressed the need for sufficient number of washrooms for inmates and their regular cleaning & upkeep. Considering the industry area around Jail, Shunty emphasised the need to identify chemicals being used in the said industry and emergency response plans such as their antidote etc. be ascertained as a part of disaster preparedness. 

Additionally, Shunty visited vocational sections such as the bakery, carpentry, welding, powerloom, knitting,  woodwork, and tailoring workshops. He also inspected the CCTV control room, and other recreational facilities. Jail officials briefed him on various Industrial Training Institute (ITI) courses available to inmates for skill development.

In a meeting with jail authorities, Shunty reviewed administrative procedures and issued directives to streamline processes, ensuring that undertrials and prisoners can meet family members in line with established protocols. He also enquired about the overall health and well-being of the inmates.

SDM Jasleen Kaur Bhullar, Assistant Civil Surgeon Dr Vivek Kataria, Jail Superintendent (Additional Charge) Varun Sharma, Deputy Superintendent Harbans Singh, and others were also present.
