Punjab Civic Polls Signal AAP’s Continued Dominance, BJP Makes Notable Gains
The results of the Municipal Corporation, Municipal Council and Nagar Panchayat elections in Punjab have provided important political indicators ahead of the 2027 Punjab Assembly elections. The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has once again demonstrated its popularity among the masses by winning 958 out of a total of 1,977 seats.
The results suggest that the party continues to enjoy significant public support across the state. Several welfare initiatives, including 300 units of free electricity for consumers and free bus travel for women, appear to have contributed to AAP’s continued appeal. Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann and AAP Punjab President and Cabinet Minister Aman Arora hailed the party’s victory and thanked voters and party workers for their support. With this strong performance, AAP is expected to intensify preparations for the 2027 Assembly elections.
The Congress emerged as the second-largest party by securing 397 seats. The results have strengthened the position of Punjab Congress President Amarinder Singh Raja Warring, who has worked consistently to revive the party's fortunes in the state. Former Chief Minister and Member of Parliament Charanjit Singh Channi also reinforced his image as a leader capable of attracting votes and mobilizing support for the Congress.
The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) won 192 seats. Although the party performed reasonably well in several areas, its tally was lower than in previous local body elections. This decline raises questions about the party’s future strategy and whether it may consider alliances to regain political ground before the 2027 Assembly elections.
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) registered a significant improvement in its performance. The party appointed Kewal Singh Dhillon as its new Punjab President, replacing Sunil Jakhar, shortly before the counting of votes on May 28, 2026. BJP secured 172 seats, a considerable increase from its previous performance when it remained in double digits. The party performed particularly well in Pathankot, Mukerian and Abohar, reflecting growing support in urban areas. However, it fell short of expectations in places such as Nawanshahr, Garhshankar, Rahon, Mohali, Kapurthala and Batala. The results have sparked discussions about whether the BJP will contest the 2027 Assembly elections independently or seek an alliance with another political party.
The Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) managed to win seven seats. Although the number is relatively small, it could provide a morale boost for the party and help strengthen its organizational base in the coming years. Whether the BSP chooses to align with another political party before the Assembly elections remains uncertain.
Independent candidates also made a notable impact, with 251 Independents emerging victorious. Many of these candidates are believed to be affiliated with political parties but contested independently after being denied party tickets. Their success highlights the importance of local leadership and personal influence in municipal politics.
Overall, AAP secured control of five Municipal Corporations. The BJP won a majority in Abohar and emerged as the single largest party in Pathankot with 22 seats, while Congress succeeded in winning the Kapurthala Municipal Corporation. As political parties assess these results, attention will increasingly turn toward the 2027 Punjab Assembly elections. However, elections to the Hoshiarpur Municipal Corporation and several Municipal Committees are still pending.
Another important political development will be the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Punjab. It remains unclear how many voter names may be added, corrected or removed during this process. The coming months will reveal whether political parties opt for pre-poll alliances or prefer to keep their options open for post-election arrangements. Ultimately, it will be the voters of Punjab who decide the future of political leaders and parties in the 2027 Assembly elections.
