The Department of Life Long Learning and Extension, Panjab University, today organised a pledge programme to mark the 16th National Voters’ Day.

Chandigarh, January 23, 2026: The Department of Life Long Learning and Extension, Panjab University, today organised a pledge programme to mark the 16th National Voters’ Day.

Faculty members, research scholars, students and staff of the department participated in the programme.

Addressing the gathering, Dr. Parmjit Singh Kang, Department of Life Long Learning and Extension, highlighted the history and significance of National Voters’ Day. He stated that the Election Commission of India was constituted on January 25, 1950, initially as a single-member body headed by the Chief Election Commissioner, which later evolved into a multi-member institution. He also referred to various electoral reforms undertaken over the years to strengthen the functioning of the Commission.

Highlighting the spirit of democracy, he said the primary objective of the celebration is to ensure maximum voter registration and encourage active participation of citizens in the electoral process.

The programme concluded with a vote of thanks proposed by Ms. Arshdeep Kaur Mangat.
