Preterm child weighing 1.1kg with rare congenital malformation operated successfully at CMC & H

Ludhiana: A preterm child weighing 1.1 kg was born with right sided congenital diaphragmatic hernia. Diaphragmatic hernia is a rare congenital malformation in which, wall between chest and abdomen is not formed and child had liver and intestine in chest. Incidence of right sided diaphragmatic hernia is 2-3 per 1 lakh births. Child was operated successfully by Paediatric Surgery team led by Dr. William Bhatti, including, Dr. Vishal Michael and Dr. Chitresh Chaudhary. Post surgery child was kept in Neonatal ICU under care of Dr. PV Verughese and was discharged yesterday in a stable condition.

Such rare congenital malformations are usually operated successfully in our Department of Paediatric surgery. We also have a dedicated NICU and PICU which is fully equipped to take care of sick children.
