Chandigarh, November 14, 2025: Diabetes affects people of all ages and has become a major health concern today. To raise awareness on diabetes and its related complications, World Diabetes Day is observed on 14th November each year. The World Health Organization’s theme of this year’s event is ‘Diabetes and Well-being,’ implying that diabetic patients need to maintain a connection between physical and mental health for a healthier life.

Dr Ravul Jindal, Director, Vascular Surgery, Fortis Hospital Mohali, through an advisory sheds light on the warning signs, causes and treatment options for diabetes.

What is diabetes?
Diabetes is a disease wherein blood glucose (sugar) is too high as the body is not able to make enough insulin or cannot process it properly. Insulin is needed to move glucose from the blood into the cells. However, high blood glucose can damage the nerves, eyes, kidney and heart.

Dr Jindal, added, “Diabetes is a leading cause of stroke, heart attack, kidney failure and Peripheral Vascular Disease (PVD). The disease mainly affects people who have had diabetes for more than 10 years, uncontrolled sugar levels along with associated history of blood pressure and smoking. When diabetes is uncontrolled, it causes complications such as diabetic foot, blindness, limb amputation, heart disease, kidney failure and even early death.”

Warning signs
Discussing the symptoms of diabetes, Dr Jindal, said, “A diabetic person will experience increased thirst and urination, especially at night. There is also an increase in appetite. Constant fatigue also affects patients as the body is unable to process glucose for energy. Vision may become blurry due to high blood sugar, as it affects fluid levels in the eyes. Sores may take a long time to heal owing to poor blood circulation.”

Prevention is better than cure
Stating that one could prevent diabetes by maintaining a healthy weight, Dr Jindal, added, “Stay physically active as exercise helps lower the risk of developing diabetes by almost 60% and keep body weight under check. Consume a balanced diet which includes minerals, carbohydrates, protein, fibre and healthy fats. Reduce your intake of sugar, saturated fats and processed meats. One should also quit consumption of tobacco-related products and manage stress.”

Treatment options
Stating that medical management was important to keep diabetes at bay, Dr Jindal, said, “Ensure to keep blood sugar and blood pressure under control as it is crucial to prevent the worsening of blood vessels. Lifestyle modifications such as abstaining from smoking, regular physical activity and maintaining ideal weight are also paramount. Medication or insulin therapy is prescribed depending on the type of diabetes.”
