Chandigarh, June 16, 2026: Panjab University (PU), Chandigarh's Centre for Social Work, in collaboration with HelpAge India, organised a seminar on “Climate Resilient Ageing - Ensuring Care, Dignity and Agency” to mark World Elder Abuse Awareness Day.
PU Registrar Prof. Yajvender Pal Verma, released the report. The event brought together senior citizens, academicians, climate experts and stakeholders to deliberate on the growing impact of climate change on older persons.
A major highlight of the seminar was the release of HelpAge India’s landmark study on Climate Resilient Ageing, which examines the vulnerabilities and challenges faced by older persons amid climate-related risks.
Addressing the gathering, Prof. Verma highlighted the heightened vulnerability of older persons during climate emergencies and emphasised the need for stronger community support systems, improved access to welfare schemes, and age-inclusive climate and disaster management planning.
The panel discussion featured Brig. J.S. Jagdev, President, Mohali Senior Citizens’ Association; Manmohan Singh, former Director, India Meteorological Department, Chandigarh; Dr. Manoj Kumar, Chairperson, Centre for Public Health, PU; and Er. Nitika Singla, Disaster Management Professional, Centre for Disaster Management, MGSIPA, Government of Punjab.
Speaking on the occasion, Manmohan Singh noted that older persons are among the most vulnerable groups affected by climate-related challenges such as heatwaves, floods, droughts and extreme weather events.
Dr. Manoj Kumar stressed the urgent need to strengthen climate-resilient care systems to safeguard the health, dignity and well-being of older persons.
Brig. J.S. Jagdev emphasised the importance of inclusive policies, stronger social protection measures and greater integration of older persons' concerns into climate adaptation and disaster preparedness initiatives.
Kamal Sharma, State Incharge, HelpAge India, called for collective action to protect the rights, dignity and well-being of older persons and ensure their meaningful inclusion in climate resilience and development efforts.
The event was attended by representatives of HelpAge India, including Kamal Sharma, Arti Tikoo, Ashok Patial, Raju Singh and other team members.
