Chandigarh, May 5, 2026: Five-day meeting of the Expert Advisory Committee (EAC) to develop a trilingual (English-Hindi-Punjabi) glossary for Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) commenced today at Panjab University.
The prestigious EAC meeting is being hosted by the School of Punjabi Studies, Panjab University from May 5 to May 9, 2026, in collaboration with the Commission for Scientific and Technical Terminology (CSTT), Ministry of Education, Government of India.
PU Vice Chancellor Prof. Renu Vig and Rajya Sabha Member Satnam Singh Sandhu attended the inaugural session as Chief Guests. The meeting began with the ceremonial lighting of the lamp. Dr. Paramjit Sidhu, Head, Department of Punjabi, welcomed the guests and members of the Expert Advisory Committee. The objectives and significance of this initiative were outlined by Deepak Kumar, Assistant Director, CSTT. The session was conducted by Prof. Yograj Angrish, and the vote of thanks was presented by Prof. Uma Sethi.
In her address, PU Vice Chancellor Prof. Renu Vig said that multilingual technical education is the need of the hour, and this initiative is an important step in alignment with the National Education Policy 2020 and national AI initiatives. She added that Panjab University has always prioritised Punjab and Punjabi language. Highlighting Punjab’s heritage and the university’s foundation, she said that the university has always been at the forefront in serving Punjab and Punjabi.
Addressing the students, Rajya Sabha MP Sandhu said that the availability of technical knowledge in Indian languages will greatly benefit students from rural areas and non-English backgrounds. He said that this initiative will contribute significantly towards building an inclusive and self-reliant India and will encourage students to learn in their mother tongue. He further emphasised that in the age of AI, new opportunities have opened up for regional languages.
Sandhu encouraged students to use new technologies ethically while exploring employment opportunities.
Experts and scholars in language and technology from across the country are participating in the prestigious meeting. In the coming days, detailed deliberations will be held on the development of trilingual technical terminology related to AI/ML.
