Chandigarh, May 27, 2026: In line with the appeal of the Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the initiative of the Chandigarh Administration to observe Vehicle Free Day every Wednesday, Panjab University students, teachers, and administrative officials today actively participated in the “Vehicle Free Wednesday” drive across the PU campuses in Sectors 14 and 25.
The initiative was carried out under the guidance of PU Vice Chancellor Prof. Renu Vig, PU Registrar Prof. Yajvender Pal Verma, and NSS Programme Coordinator Dr. Anupam Bahri.
The initiative follows the meeting of University Officers chaired by PU Vice Chancellor Prof. Renu Vig to encourage students, teaching and non-teaching employees to refrain from using personal vehicles every Wednesday and instead utilise the free shuttle bus and e-rickshaw facilities available within the campus.
Prof. Renu Vig thanked the participants for participating in the day long drive despite scorching heat and harsh weather. She informed that the feedback is being taken from all stakeholders to make this initiative more successful and participative in upcoming Wednesdays.
The volunteers of the National Service Scheme (NSS), Panjab University, actively participated in the awareness drive and motivated students, faculty members, employees, and visitors to adopt eco-friendly modes of transportation. The campaign aimed at promoting environmental sustainability, reducing vehicular pollution, conserving energy, and encouraging responsible civic behaviour within the university community.
During the day long drive, the NSS volunteers sensitised the university community about the importance of sustainable transportation and appealed to everyone to actively contribute towards building a greener and cleaner campus environment. The initiative also witnessed enthusiastic participation from Chairpersons, Directors, Coordinators, Heads of Departments, members of PUSC, university officials, faculty, staff, students, and NSS volunteers.
