Organs of 28-Year-Old Brain-Dead Youth Give Life to Six Families

Rohtak, May 16, 2026: Six families have received a new lease on life following the decision by the family of a 28-year-old youth from Bhiwani—who had been critically injured in a road accident and subsequently declared brain-dead—to consent to organ donation.
For the first time in the history of PGIMS, Rohtak, teams from two different Army hospitals arrived simultaneously to retrieve organs. Dr. H.K. Agarwal, Vice-Chancellor of the Pt. Bhagwat Dayal Sharma University of Health Sciences (UHS), said that former Minister Manish Kumar Grover, along with doctors and staff members from UHS, joined to bid a final farewell to the brain-dead youth. While offering solace to the youth's grieving family, former Minister Grover remarked that this act of organ donation is no less than an act of martyrdom.
Vice-Chancellor Dr. H.K. Agarwal expressed confidence that this noble act of organ donation would prove instrumental in changing public perception regarding organ donation. He informed that the youth's heart has been sent to Delhi; the liver has been sent to the Army Hospital Research and Referral (RR) in Delhi, and one kidney has been sent to the Army Hospital in Chandimandir. One kidney and two corneas have been transplanted into patients at PGIMS. He noted that in this campaign for organ donation, the Army now stands shoulder-to-shoulder with society.
It is pertinent to note that the youth, who was critically injured in a road accident on the Bhiwani-Dadri road on the evening of May 13, was initially taken to a private hospital before being transferred to the PGIMS Trauma Center. After he was declared brain-dead, a team from SOTTO (State Organ and Tissue Transplant Organization) Haryana counseled his family members.
Following further counseling and persuasion by Vice-Chancellor Dr. Agarwal, the youth's wife and father ultimately gave their consent for organ donation. Immediately thereafter, the process for allocating the organs was initiated. VC Dr. Agarwal further informed that at 5:30 AM on May 16, the heart retrieval team from the Army Hospital Research and Referral, Delhi, arrived at the Trauma Center's Operation Theatre (OT) via road. Meanwhile, a team led by Colonel Dr. Anurag arrived by helicopter from the Command Hospital, Chandimandir. During a procedure that lasted approximately three hours in the operating theater, the organs were retrieved one by one.
Director Dr. S.K. Singhal said that, thanks to the efforts of Vice-Chancellor Dr. H.K. Agarwal, a revolution in organ donation has swept across the state, and PGIMS is now on track to emerge as a major transplant center for organ donation. Under the leadership of Dr. Sukhbir Singh, the Nodal Officer for SOTTO (State Organ and Tissue Transplant Organization) Haryana, a dedicated team—comprising Transplant Coordinator Deepti, Media Advisor Rajesh Kumar, and Coordinator Rohit—has been working tirelessly around the clock.
Registrar Dr. Roop Singh described organ donation as not merely a medical triumph, but a victory for social consciousness. Medical Superintendent Dr. Kundan Mittal noted that, to facilitate such a large-scale multi-organ retrieval and transplant operation, teams specializing in Anesthesia, Surgery, Microbiology, Pathology, Forensic Medicine, Nursing, Blood Banking, and Radiology worked continuously for 36 hours without a break.
Present on the occasion were Dr. Varun Arora (In-charge of the Public Relations Department), Dr. Tarun, SOTTO Nodal Officer Dr. Sukhbir Singh, Dr. Surendra Verma, Dr. Varun Agarwal, Dr. Vivek Thakur, Dr. Ankur Goyal, Dr. Gaurav, Dr. Love, Dr. Pankaj, Dr. Vinod, Dr. Yogesh, Dr. Paramjit Gill, Deepti Kharb, Rajesh Bhad, and others.
Making a pivotal contribution to the success of the organ donation drive, the Rohtak Police established a "Green Corridor" on Saturday. Vice-Chancellor Dr. H.K. Agarwal and other officials expressed their gratitude to Deputy Commissioner Sachin Gupta and the Haryana Police.
Under the guidance of Superintendent of Police Gaurav Rajpurohit and the leadership of Additional Superintendent of Police Ayush Yadav, a contingent of over 150 Rohtak Police personnel played a crucial role in ensuring the timely delivery of organs to the respective hospitals. A Green Corridor was established along the designated route to ensure that the human organs could reach the concerned hospitals without any hindrance. Throughout this process, care was also taken to ensure that the general public did not face any inconvenience.
