Nuclear power- an Eco-friendly energy source

Kapurthala, August 24, 2022: Pushpa Gujral Science City celebrated Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav in the  collaboration with Nuclear Power corporation of India Ltd.(NPCIL) by organizing a talk on “ Nuclear Energy Safe Energy” and Drawing and Poster making Competitions involving participation of 75 students and teachers from different educational institutions. The event was celebrated to commemorate 75 years of progressive India.

Dr. Neelima  Jerath, Director General Science City while addressing the participants said that nuclear energy is one of the most cost effective energy sources and is essential to our response to climate change and greenhouse gas emissions.  Dr Jerath further said that Nuclear power is an efficient. It ismore cost-effective than fossil fuels such as coal and gas and subject to all necessary precautions it is safe. This is the reason whiy it is widely used in all developed countries. She said that Nuclear energy was first utilized commercially in the 1950s, since then it has continued to grow, and there are now around 440 nuclear power reactors across the world, providing 10% of the planet’s electricity. In fact, the generation of one MW of nuclear power is equivalent to the renewable energy that is produced by 400 acres of trees. Nuclear power will be the most effective resource for curtailing global warming and climate change. She also informed that the Nuclear Power gallery at Pushpa Gujral Science City has been upgraded by NPCIL in 2021. The gallery showcases the various aspects of nuclear energy, benefits and hazards of nuclear power and its applications for the betterment of human life and environment through interactive exhibits.

Gaurav Kaloniya, Scientific Officer ‘E’, NPCIL delivered a talk on “Nuclear Energy Safe Energy”. Kaloniya said that Nuclear power is safe, Clean and environment friendly, with its life cycle emissions of greenhouse gases being compatible to those of other renewable energy sources. It is baseload source of electricity that is a continuous source of power supply. He further said that Indian nuclear power reactors adopt highest standards of safety in all aspects of nuclear power viz, setting, design, construction, commissioning and operation. Nuclear power plants are designed based on principles of redundancy adopting a “defense in depth” approach and withstand extreme natural vents like earthquakes, floods, storms, etc.
