Panjab University Organises 4th Lecture on Mental Health Awarenes; Lecture Series on World Suicide Prevention Day
Panjab University (PU), Chandigarh observed World Suicide Prevention Day by organising the 4th Lecture under its Mental Health Awareness Lecture Series at Girls Hostel-7. The session, titled "Emotional Intelligence, Conflict Management & Suicide Prevention: Building Supportive Hostel Spaces" was specially organised for the non-teaching staff of University hostels.
Chandigarh, September 11, 2026: Panjab University (PU), Chandigarh observed World Suicide Prevention Day by organising the 4th Lecture under its Mental Health Awareness Lecture Series at Girls Hostel-7. The session, titled "Emotional Intelligence, Conflict Management & Suicide Prevention: Building Supportive Hostel Spaces" was specially organised for the non-teaching staff of University hostels.
The session was delivered by Clinical Psychologist, Department of Psychiatry, Government Medical College & Hospital (GMCH), Sector 32, Chandigarh, Dr. Satyadhar Dwivedi. The lecture was practical and interactive, the speaker shared simple, action-oriented strategies that were easy to understand and relevant to the everyday experiences of hostel staff.
The discussion focused on recognising signs of emotional distress, responding sensitively to students, managing conflicts, communicating with empathy and providing timely support.
Through practical examples and real-life situations, the session highlighted how non-teaching staff can play an important role in early identification of distress and in creating a safe, supportive and approachable hostel environment. The emphasis remained on listening without judgement, responding appropriately and connecting students with professional help whenever required.
Dean Student Welfare (Women) PU, Prof. Namita Gupta appreciated the initiative and encouraged meaningful and open discussions around suicide prevention and mental health. She highlighted the University's commitment to ensuring that students receive timely help and to continuously strengthening a safe, healthy and supportive environment across the campus.
The programme was coordinated by Chief Medical Officer, PU, Dr. Rupinder Kaur.with Counsellors Pulkita and Deepti. Mrs. Sonia Sharma, Warden, Girls Hostel-7, extended support in facilitating the programme at the hostel.
The lecture was organised by the Office of the Dean Student Welfare, Mental Health Club and Bhai Ghanaiya Ji Institute of Health, Panjab University, in collaboration with the Department of Psychiatry, Government Medical College & Hospital (GMCH), Sector 32, Chandigarh. DCSA Panjab University Students Secures First Runner-Up Position in National Hackathon Organized by Chandigarh Police; Awarded Rs. 95,000 cash.
