Jalandhar: NSS Wing of Apeejay College of Fine Arts, Jalandhar celebrated Vigilance Awareness Week with the objective to aware the young students about the Gender Issues engulfed around in our society.

Even in 21st Century where all of us consider ourselves ultra modern and broad minded, unintentionally we become the part of the trends and customs where one gender is dominating the other. It is not just the society around or the outside world where these gender roles and inequality exist but this begins right within the families at our homes.

Gender discrimination is against the very nature of Human Rights. Differentiating with someone on the basis of their gender questions the way they have been born.

So, it becomes important to sensitize our today’s youth with this thought that gender inequality should not be encouraged. They should stand up if it takes place either in the outside world or within their own homes. If our youth will develop their notions, only then we can hope to see a tomorrow where everyone is enjoying equal rights and opportunities.

NSS Volunteers also took a pledge against all kinds of hurdles taking place in the development of nation and in being a good citizen.

They took a pledge to follow the right path in life, to neither take nor offer bribe, to perform all tasks in honest and transparent manner, to act in public interest, to follow integrity in personal behaviour and last but not the least to take a stand against any incident of unfair things happening around.

Dr Navjot Deol, Department of English was the chief spokesperson for this lecture and she too put forth that gender biasness is a global issue. The eventual result of this biasness is stereotype attitude and clearly one gender faces disadvantages just because of these odd and unfair perceptions and not because of any incompetence in them. She highlighted the discriminations which are practiced between two genders- male and female in our daily life right from the prejudices and gender roles, unequal opportunities to sexual harassment both at home and in the outside world.

Talking of the action plan what all of us can do about this, she strongly put forth that all of us need to take a stand against this biasness

Talking to male students directly she put forth males need to empathise with females, they should share the household responsibilities and not indulge and support others passing sexist remarks and while talking to girls, she put forth that they need to stop accepting the platter the way it is served to them full of orthodox and ancient perceptions and should speak for themselves and all the other around.

Dr Sucharita Sharma, Director, Apeejay Education Society appreciated NSS team for taking up this subject to discuss with students. In fact, she put forth, to achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls is one of the Global Goals by United Nations of Sustainable Development.

She put forth being the responsible citizens of our nations it becomes our responsibility to respect others’ rights as well and any kind of discrimination, sexism or prejudice against any gender should come to an end.

She congratulated Ms. Simkee Dev, Dean NSS and her team for successfully organizing this event.
