National Seminar on Indian Constitution Held at B.R. Ambedkar Centre, Panjab University

Chandigarh, February 27, 2026: The B.R. Ambedkar Centre of Panjab University today organized a One Day National Seminar today on Dr. B.R. Ambedkar and the Indian Constitution: Constitutional Democracy, Social Justice and Inclusive Development.

Prof. Ronki Ram, distinguished scholar and currently Professor Emeritus with IDC, Chandigarh delivered the Keynote address while Prof. MadhurimaVerma gave the inaugural address and PU Registrar Prof. Y.P. Verma was the Guest of Honour.

Prof. Navjot, the Coordinator of the Seminar introduced the theme of the seminar and emphasised the interconnections between the three pillars of Ambedkar’s philosophy of constitutional governance, namely democracy, social justice and development. She argued that the completion of 76 years of the adoption of the Indian constitution offers an opportunity to assess the achievements and point out the gaps in independent India’s trajectory on these goals.

Prof Ronki Ram’s keynote address delved into the key aspects of Dr. Ambedkar’s deep scholarly and political thinking on the transformations required in Indian society in the economic, spiritual and political domains. This understanding informed his work on the Indian constitution. The Indian experience with constitutional democracy, Prof Ram argued, showed that the constitution is not merely a legal document but a living document that embodied the spirit of our society.

Prof Y.P Verma drew attention to Ambedkar’s contribution in the making of key institutions of modern India and his ideas on science, technology and economic development.

Around 30 papers were presented in the technical sessions of the seminar by scholars and academics from different disciplines of the social sciences and together the research work showcases the interdisciplinary academic focus of the centre.
