National Handloom Day 2025 Celebrated
The University Institute of Fashion Technology & Vocational Development (UIFT & VD), Panjab University, in collaboration with Khadi Ashram, Chandigarh, today celebrated National Handloom Day 2025 at the Student Centre, Panjab University, with great enthusiasm and cultural reverence.

Chandigarh, 7 August 2025: The University Institute of Fashion Technology & Vocational Development (UIFT & VD), Panjab University, in collaboration with Khadi Ashram, Chandigarh, today celebrated National Handloom Day 2025 at the Student Centre, Panjab University, with great enthusiasm and cultural reverence.
The event featured an engaging exhibition of handloom products by Khadi Ashram, alongside thoughtfully curated displays by UIFT & VD students, who presented innovative design concepts inspired by India’s handloom heritage. The visual showcase reflected how traditional weaving techniques can be integrated into contemporary aesthetics, promoting sustainability and indigenous identity in design.
Held under the guidance of Prof. Prabhdip Brar, Chairperson, UIFT & VD, and Shri Sanjay Kumar Sharma, Secretary, Khadi Ashram, the celebration aimed to create awareness among the youth about the importance of supporting local artisans and reviving age-old crafts through modern platforms.
The program was curated by Gargi Kharbanda, Guest Faculty at UIFT & VD, whose mentorship helped students translate their academic learning into visual storytelling rooted in cultural consciousness.
During the exhibition, the Student Centre came alive with vibrant displays of khadi, intricate weaves, and design interpretations that bridged the past and present. Attendees explored a variety of handloom textiles—each carrying a story of heritage, craftsmanship, and resilience. The collaborative spirit between the institute and Khadi Ashram allowed students to engage directly with authentic craft narratives and understand the value of handmade in a machine-driven world. Faculty members, students, artisans, and visitors participated with great zeal, turning the event into a living gallery of India’s textile traditions. The celebration not only honoured the spirit of National Handloom Day but also reaffirmed UIFT & VD’s commitment to preserving and promoting India’s rich cultural and craft heritage through design education and public engagement.
