‘Make learning a lifelong habit, not just to pass exams’: Gujarat Minister tells students

Ahmedabad, Aug 23 (IANS) Merely passing examinations should not be treated as the measure of success, Gujarat Science and Technology Minister Arjunbhai Modhwadia said at the conclusion of the three-day Space Festival-2026 in Ahmedabad on Sunday, urging students to make continuous learning part of their lives.

Addressing students at Gujarat Science City, where the festival was organised from August 21 to 23 as part of 'National Space Day' celebrations, Modhwadia said excellence in any field, rather than examination results alone, should be the aim of young people.

“Merely passing an examination is not a sign of success in life. Achieving excellence in any field, whether science, commerce, arts, sports or culture, is true success,” he said.

The minister urged students to develop the habit of continuously learning and acquiring knowledge about new subjects.

He cited scientists including Dr Vikram Sarabhai, Dr A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, Dr Homi Bhabha and Dr Satish Dhawan as examples of people who contributed to the country through a sustained commitment to learning and research.

Modhwadia also pointed to the changing nature of warfare and the growing importance of technology in national security.

"Conventional weapons and soldiers had traditionally dominated warfare, while cyber security, artificial intelligence, drones and other advanced technologies were becoming increasingly important," he said.

The new generation, he said, would therefore need to acquire expertise in technology and prepare to contribute to the country’s security as well as its development.

He also extended his best wishes to students interested in careers in cyber security and related fields.

Referring to Gujarat’s scientific institutions, the minister said: "Ahmedabad had developed into an important centre for space research because of Dr Vikram Sarabhai’s contribution."

He noted that institutions including the Space Applications Centre, Physical Research Laboratory, Gujarat Biotechnology Research Centre and Institute of Seismological Research were operating in the state.

The minister said emerging sectors such as semiconductors, artificial intelligence, quantum technology and space technology were creating new opportunities for Gujarat’s youth.

“The developed India of 2047 will be the India of today’s students,” Modhwadia said, calling on the young generation to contribute to the creation of a self-reliant, secure and developed country through knowledge, science, technology and innovation.

During the concluding ceremony, prizes were presented to winners of the rangoli competition, while certificates were given to institutions, startups and other participants in recognition of their contribution to the festival.
