Mumbai, December 10, 2015: Ahead of the new Tourism Policy of Maharashtra to be announced in the year 2016, the Government of Maharashtra has published a Consultation Paper on the proposed Tourism Policy seeking suggestions and opinions from tourism stakeholders - mainly industry and trade stakeholders; and public at large. 
 
The Government of Maharashtra is set to launch its new Tourism Policy in the year 2016 with a vision to develop Maharashtra a popular and sustainable tourism destination. The new policy will promote Maharashtra’s vast experiences on global, regional and local practices to provide an inclusive opportunity and access to all socio-economic demographics, reads the Consultation Paper.
 
Smt. Valsa  Nair Singh  IAS,  Secretary, Tourism and Cultural Affairs, Maharashtra State, said, “The new Tourism Policy has envisioned promoting Maharashtra as the numero uno tourist destination by developing a robust tourism infrastructure and facilitating investment in the sector. As the new policy is on the anvil, we would like all important stakeholders of the tourism industry and public to extend their suggestions and opinions on the proposed draft. It will help the Government take an inclusive view in building the tourism roadmap of the State.”
 
As key objectives, the new Tourism Policy will focus on promoting private investments; accelerate projects through public-private participation (PPP) mode. To enhance global investment prospects in Maharashtra’s tourism, the new policy will also undertake investment outreach to global investor community.
 
Maharashtra Tourism has set a target to become a leading tourist destination in the world by 2025 and attract investments worth Rs 30,000 crore. It has also envisaged creating one million jobs in tourism sector. The new Policy will also aim at doubling the number of tourism projects in five years and triple it in 10 years.
 
Key Highlights:
Tourism sector growth of 10 per cent p.a. and share of 15 per cent in GSDP by encouraging mega project; especially investments in less developed tourism zones.
Focus on MSME tourism units and additional incentives to employment intensive mega units to meet the target of creating one million jobs.
Development of Special Tourism Zones / Districts.
Development of tourism growth Corridors by classifying separate tourist cities, clusters.
Public-Private Partnership (PPP) Model for growth in tourism sector and setting up of a Transaction Advisory Cell.
Boosting Skill Development by providing world-class institutes, training certifications to guides, hospitality staff, etc.
 
The Government will also enhance focus on existing tourism opportunities and create further opportunities in Sustainable Tourism, Rural and Agriculture Tourism (where rural land, about 55% of the total land available, will be utilised), Mango Tourism, MICE (Meetings, Incentives Conferences and Exhibitions), Theme-Based Tourism. Besides, high potential tourism zones will be identified and promoted.
