Ludhiana consumers troubled by electricity bills and unscheduled power cuts: Parminder Mehta
Where have the guarantees of 24-hour power supply and affordable electricity gone? asks Parminder Mehta
Ludhiana, September 14, 2026: Consumers in the city are already troubled by electricity bills, while frequent power cuts have further aggravated their problems. Senior leader and former councillor Parminder Mehta alleged that PSPCL is sending consumers hefty electricity bills by adding previous outstanding amounts, forcing many people to make repeated visits to PSPCL offices to get their bills corrected.
Parminder Mehta said that the Aam Aadmi Party government had guaranteed 24-hour electricity supply and affordable power to the people, but today residents of several areas of Ludhiana are facing unscheduled power cuts and hefty electricity bills. He questioned where the government's guarantees of 24-hour power supply and affordable electricity had gone.
He said Power Minister Tarnpreet Singh Saund had announced that electricity bills carrying unusually high amounts would be examined and corrected. However, according to him, confusion among consumers has arisen because the arrangement was reportedly stated to be applicable only for a limited period and Ludhiana was also not included under it.
Mehta said several consumers in Ludhiana were approaching PSPCL offices over alleged discrepancies in their electricity bills. He said officials were clearly telling them that they did not have the authority to correct bills generated online without meter readings, as the matter came under the jurisdiction of the Punjab government. Meanwhile, a large number of consumers have been making repeated visits to electricity offices for several days to get their bills corrected and are facing considerable inconvenience.
On the other hand, power cuts continue in several parts of the city, with electricity supply remaining disrupted for several hours at a stretch, causing inconvenience to residents.
He said that on the one hand, people are not receiving adequate electricity supply, while on the other, they are being handed hefty bills. In such a situation, it is natural for questions to be raised over the government's promises of 24-hour electricity supply and affordable power.
Parminder Mehta demanded that PSPCL should resolve consumers' billing-related complaints at the earliest, immediately correct wrong or inflated bills, and find a permanent solution to the problem of unscheduled power cuts.
