KMV students gain Practical Insights into Traditional Crafts at Saras Mela, PAU Ludhiana

Jalandhar, October 21, 2025: Kanya Maha Vidyalaya (Autonomous ) Students from the Post Graduate (PG) Department of Fashion Designing concluded a highly successful educational trip to the renowned Saras Mela held at Punjab Agricultural University (PAU), Ludhiana. The visit provided an invaluable platform for aspiring designers to connect with master artisans and gain hands-on experience in traditional Indian handicrafts. The educational tour was specifically designed to bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge acquired in the classroom and the practical skills integral to the heritage of Indian textiles and design. The students engaged in direct and insightful interactions with artisans representing diverse cultural and regional art forms from across the country. During their visit, the students focused on gaining deep, hands-on understanding of several key textile and handicraft techniques, including:
*Intricate Embroidery: Learning about regional stitching styles and the cultural stories they represent.
*Traditional Printing: Gaining exposure to block printing, tie-and-dye, and other resist techniques.
*Weaving Techniques: Understanding the complexities of different looms and fiber manipulation to create unique fabric structures.
*Other Traditional Crafts: Exploring various handicrafts that inform accessory design and surface ornamentation.
The trip successfully met its core objective to provide students with a deeper appreciation for the cultural significance, sustainability, and sheer skill embedded in these traditional crafts. By learning directly from skilled artisans, the students gained an appreciation for the meticulous effort and expertise required to preserve these art forms.
Principal Prof Atima Sharma Dwiveri averred that the institution views this exposure as a crucial step in promoting culturally sensitive and informed design practices among its students.
