Jalandhar: PGF Department of Mathematics of Doaba College Jalandhar organized DBT sponsored International Ganit Karyashala on the topic “How to learn Mathematics in a meaningful way and be successful in it”. Dr. Harpreet Kaur, Faculty of British Columbia Institute of Technology, Canada graced the occasion as a Resource Person for the workshop. She was accorded a hearty welcome by Principal Dr Pardeep Bhandari, Prof Arvind Nanda- Head, Dr Rajiv Khosla –Over all Coordinator, Prof Gulshan Sharma-Scheme Coordinator, Faculty and 493 participants from all over the country.

The purpose of organizing the workshop is to improve mathematical learning of undergraduate students, to improve the confidence of students towards problem solving, self-learning, communication skills and capacity to work in teams. This workshop is a first step towards that direction.

Welcoming the resource person Principal Dr Pardeep Bhandari said that the primarily, the purpose of such fruitful international tie-ups is to make Mathematics subject more interesting, interactive and practical oriented and to improve the visualization of abstract concepts of mathematics. Secondly, the objective of this event is to give students an exposure to interactive tool Geogebra software which is one of the most widely used software in mathematics field. 

Dr. Harpreet discussed about the importance of Mathematical Learning strategies. She gave examples from her teaching experience about successful strategies to teach mathematics .and discussed about collaborative projects with students. She focused on the applications of Calculus for beginners and discussed application of Calculus in Biology by taking the example of growth of tumour in the body and discussed about Robot Trajectories Problem. She described how to use free resources and technological skills to enhance learning skills in mathematics. In addition, she discussed about using software like SPSS, R studio, Excel. She presented real life problem of Statistics and analysed them using excel. She demonstrated the geometrical visualization of Calculus problems on Geogebra software. She explained Geogebra is a free software and one does not need to learn programming to use it.
