Chandigarh, September 26, 2025: Panjab University(PU)'s Department of Sociology, in collaboration with PRAXIS, organised a thought-provoking talk titled "Inquilab Then, Inquilab Now: Bhagat Singh's Vision of Independent India".
The session, attended by over 90 students from various departments, was an enriching discourse on the revolutionary ideas of Bhagat Singh, India's iconic freedom fighter. The event was graced by Dr. Vinod Choudhary, Chairperson, Department of Sociology, Dr. Lallan Baghel (Department of Philosophy), and Dr. Pankaj Srivastava (Chair, Department of Philosophy). The session was chaired by Dr. Vinod Choudhary.
The session featured Prof. Jagmohan Singh, Bhagat Singh's nephew, who provided an intimate and insightful perspective on the ideological foundation of Bhagat Singh's vision for a free India. Prof. Singh explored the socio-political landscape before and after British rule, reflecting on the economic exploitation under the British Raj, including the colonial taxation system (Lagaan) and the profound economic disparities it created. He also spoke about significant events like the Namdhari Movement, the Nankana Sahib massacre, and the Jallianwala Bagh tragedy, which influenced Bhagat Singh's revolutionary thought.
Through a philosophical and sociological lens, Prof. Singh delved into Bhagat Singh's unwavering stance against imperialism and his commitment to Educate, Agitate, and Organise as guiding principles for societal change. Drawing connections between Bhagat Singh's ideology and Gandhian principles of self-reliance and non-compromise, Prof. Singh highlighted how Bhagat Singh envisioned a society free from both colonial oppression and social injustices.
In the course of his talk, Prof. Singh emphasised the relevance of Bhagat Singh's ideals in today's socio-political context and challenged false narratives surrounding the status of women in Indian society. The event was an eye-opening exploration of Bhagat Singh's timeless vision and its continued relevance in shaping the future of independent India.
