Rohtak, July 4, 2026: Purple Jamun (Java Plum) is increasingly being recognized as a superfood. Beyond the fresh fruit, value-added products such as powders, syrups, beverages, and desserts are gaining popularity in the market.

In 100 gms of Ripened Jamun (Java Plum) edible portion contains, Total Carbohydrates are roughly around 14-15% in which Fiber is approx. 1 %, Protein and Fat approx. 1% and Water approx. 85%. Its omega 6: omega 3 ratio is 7:1. Predominant Vitamins and Minerals present are Vitamin C, Magnesium, Calcium, Potassium. Nikita Garg informs that Major Bioactive compounds which give Jamun (Java Plum)- Anti-oxidant, Anti-Diabetic and Anti-Microbial properties and a status in Superfood Category are: 1. Anthocyanins: A potent anti-oxidant which reduces oxidative stress and is majorly responsible for black/purple colour. 2. Jamboline and Jambosine: phytochemicals present predominantly in the seed of Jamun. They help in controlling the blood sugar by decreasing the activity of Starch Digesting enzymes called Alpha-Amylase and Alpha Glucosidase secreted by Salivary Glands and Pancreas. Since the conversion of starch into sugars becomes slow, it helps in regulating postprandial glucose levels. 3. Other phytochemicals such as Tannins, Quercetin, Gallic Acid, Ellagic Acid works synergistically with other bioactive compounds to give anti-diabetic, antioxidant and anti-microbial properties. These compounds are gut-friendly because they target harmful bad bacteria and spares good bacteria like Lactobacillus. 4. Its Astringent Properties makes it an excellent choice for mouthwashes (especially decoctions made from Jamun Bark – to treat bleeding gums) and Jamun Bark and Leaves were traditionally used as Natural Toothbrushes.
Nutritionist Nikita stated that the best ways to maximize the benefits of Jamun, 1. Eat Jamun Pulp with Skin – For Anti-oxidant properties as Anthocyanins, Flavonoids, Polyphenols, Vitamin C are more concentrated in Pulp and Skin. 2. Use seed powder and leaves for Blood Sugar Management – Jamboline, Tannins, Ellagic Acid, Essential oils are more concentrated in seed and Leaves 3. Use Jamun Leaves and Bark – for Oral Health Going beyond 100 gms of Ripped Jamun in a day will have a High Glycaemic Load despite having Low Glycaemic Index.
She cautions that low GI doesn’t give you the license for consuming in excess quantity. Enjoy it as a seasonal fruit in moderation. If you are consuming fruit pulp or juice of Jamun for Ant-Diabetic Properties, it is not worthy enough as Jambosine and Jamboline are majorly present in seeds of Jamun than pulp of Jamun
