Rohtak, March 9, 2026: Immunotherapy has emerged as a significant advancement in the field of cancer treatment. Immunotherapy strengthens and activates the body's immune system to fight cancer. This therapy helps the body's immune system recognize and attack cancer cells.
Medical oncology specialist Dr. Peyush Bajpai explained that normally, our immune system protects us from infections and abnormal cells, but cancer cells often hide from the immune system. Immunotherapy drugs help to re-identify these hidden cancer cells.
Dr. Peyush explained that initially, immunotherapy was primarily used for advanced-stage cancer, where it showed good results. Its benefits have been particularly evident in lung cancer, melanoma (skin cancer), bladder cancer, breast cancer, head and neck cancer, and some stomach and esophagus (food pipe) cancers. In some advanced cancer patients, this therapy has helped control the disease for many years.
He explained that immunotherapy is now being used even before surgery. This can increase the chances of completely removing the tumor and reduce the risk of cancer recurrence. However, immunotherapy does not have the same effect on every patient. Immunotherapy typically causes less hair loss and nausea than chemotherapy. However, because it activates the immune system, it can sometimes affect normal body functions. This can cause problems such as diarrhea, skin rashes or itching, shortness of breath, hormonal imbalances, fatigue, or weight changes.
