Haryana Congress MPs Stage Protest in Parliament; Demand Commonwealth Games 2030 Hosting Rights for Haryana

New Delhi, August 3, 2026: Haryana Congress MPs, including MP Deepender Hooda, Jai Prakash, Varun Mulana, Satpal Brahmachari, and Karmbir Bauddh, staged a protest in the Parliament premises on Monday demanding that Haryana be made the host or co-host state for the 2030 Commonwealth Games.

The MPs congratulated all Indian medal winners for bringing glory to the country and pointed out that Haryana alone contributed seven of India's 13 gold medals at the 2026 Commonwealth Games. They argued that this outstanding performance justifies Haryana's claim to host or co-host the 2030 Commonwealth Games.

They said that they had consistently urged the Central Government in Parliament that if India secures the hosting rights for the 2030 Commonwealth Games and the 2036 Olympic Games, Haryana should be included as a host or, at the very least, a co-host state. However, the Ministry of Sports has formally announced that the 2030 Commonwealth Games, if awarded to India, would be held exclusively in Ahmedabad, Gujarat. Similarly, India's bid for the 2036 Olympics is also centered solely on Ahmedabad. The MPs termed the decision unfair and said it completely ignored Haryana's contribution to Indian sports.

The Congress MPs questioned - why Haryana, despite having only about two per cent of the country's population and contributing more than 50 per cent of India's medals in the Commonwealth Games, Asian Games, and Olympics, continues to face neglect. They also expressed disappointment that the Haryana Government had not even submitted a proposal seeking host or co-host status for the state.

Expressing his displeasure, MP Deepender Hooda questioned the rationale behind selecting Ahmedabad for the 2030 Commonwealth Games despite Gujarat's comparatively limited contribution to India's medal tally. He alleged that the BJP-led Haryana Government had failed to raise the state's legitimate claim before the Centre.

Hooda said that hosting the Commonwealth Games would bring investments worth several lakh crore rupees for sports infrastructure, stadiums, and related development. If Haryana were made a co-host, the state would also benefit from such large-scale infrastructure development. He demanded that the Haryana Government immediately submit a proposal seeking host or co-host status and urged the Central Government to reconsider its decision.

MP Deepender Hooda also alleged discrimination in the allocation of sports funds. He claimed that out of the ₹3,500 crore Khelo India budget, Gujarat received ₹600 crore, while Haryana, despite producing the highest number of medal-winning athletes, was allocated only ₹80 crore, the lowest among the states. He said that Haryana's athletes consistently win the maximum number of medals at the Olympic Games, Asian Games, and Commonwealth Games, yet the state continues to be overlooked in sports funding and development.
