GNDU, Amritsar organising S.Bishan Singh Samundri Memorial Lectureship Award lecture.

Amritsar, November 6, 2015: The Department of Botanical and Environmental Sciences of Guru Nanak Dev University organized S.Bishan Singh Samundri Memorial Lectureship Award lecture, here today. This lecture was organized in the profound memory of S.Bishan Singh Samundri, Founder Vice Chancellor of Guru Nanak Dev University. The lecture was sponsored by Sardar Jaswant Singh Memorial Education Trust, Jalandhar.
S.Jang Bahadur Singh Sangha, renowned Potato Breeder delivered a special lecture on “Innovations In Modern Agriculture: A Relook”. Dr. Satwinderjeet Kaur, Head, Department of Botanical and Environmental Sciences extended a formal welcome to the guests. This was followed by the introduction to the speaker by Dr. Adarsh Pal Vig, Coordinator of the Programme.
S.Jang Bahadur Singh Sangha stressed on the importance of disease free potato stock for multiplication. He discussed about the tissue culture techniques being adopted at his farm for clonal multiplication of potato seed. Methods of micropropagation, aeroponics, ways to eliminate viruses, potato seed production, field preparation, disease control, residue management solutions, distribution of operational holdings in India and focus areas of potato cultivation were discussed in detail.  Lecture was followed by discussion session in which the speaker took up queries from teachers, research scholars and students.
Lecture was presided over by Dr. T. S. Banipal, Director Research, GNDU.  On this occasion Dr. K.S. Rai, Professor Emeritus Notre Dame, introduced the aims and objectives of Sardar Jaswant Singh Rai Memorial Trust, Jalandhar. S. Jang Bahadur Singh Sangha was facilitated with the Bishan Singh Samundri Award which included a momento, certificate and a cash prize of Rs. 25,000  which he generously donated among the toppers of M.Sc. course students. Mr. Sangha after doing his masters in Fruit and Vegetable Science from Cornell University, New York(USA) in 1994 expanded his family farms to become the largest producer of potato seed in Asia by involving more than 5500 acres land in Punjab to produce 60 thousands tonnes of seed annually by involving small and marginal farmers into this venture by use of tissue culture and disease diagnosis technologies.  The vote of thanks was presented by Prof. Avinash Kaur Nagpal. The programme was attended by Prof. Renu Bhardwaj, Prof. Saroj Aroa, Dr. A.S. Soodan, Dr. Rajinder Kaur, Dr, M.S. Bhatti, Er. Bhupinder Pal Singh. Dr. D.S. Sogi from Food Sc. and Technology, Dr. P.K. Pati and Dr. P.K. Verma from Deptt. of Biotechnology, Dr. Subhit Jain, Dr. Balbir Singh and Dr. Rajbir Kaur from Deptt. of Pharmaceutical Sc. and Dr. Inderpreet Kaur from  Deptt. of Economics Dr. Sukhdev Singh, Dean faculty of Agriculture and other faculty from Khalsa College, Amritsar also attended the lecture. / (SK Vyas, Jalandhar)
