Nilokheri, September 16, 2026: Dr Virender Singh Chauhan, Director of Haryana Institute of Rural Development (HIRD) said that Geographic Information System (GIS) can make the implementation and monitoring of rural development schemes more effective and evidence-based.
He was speaking at the concluding session of a two-day training programme on the role of GIS in rural development. Dr Chauhan said GIS can help officials assess local needs, map resources and track the status of development works more accurately.
He stressed the need for rural development officials and staff to strengthen their technical skills in line with changing technological requirements. GIS, he said, enables systematic analysis of geographical and development-related information, helping authorities set priorities and utilise resources more efficiently.
Dr Chauhan said effective monitoring and assessment of outcomes were as important as planning and implementation of a scheme. He urged participants to apply the technical knowledge gained during the training in their respective areas of work.
Programme coordinator Kamaldeep Sangwan said participants were briefed on the applications and technical aspects of GIS and its use in monitoring development schemes. Practical sessions and discussions were also held.
Junior engineers, village secretaries, additional block programme officers, clerical staff and other officials and employees of concerned departments attended the training.
