Empowering Our Future: DR HSJ Institute Hosts Self-Defence Workshop and Induction Ceremony for BDS 1st year students
Dr. Harvansh Singh Judge Institute of Dental Sciences & Hospital, Panjab University (PU), today hosted a special motivational lecture and induction ceremony for its new batch of BDS students, following the ongoing Self-Defence Training Workshop organised in collaboration with the Chandigarh Police.
Chandigarh, September 26, 2025: Dr. Harvansh Singh Judge Institute of Dental Sciences & Hospital, Panjab University (PU), today hosted a special motivational lecture and induction ceremony for its new batch of BDS students, following the ongoing Self-Defence Training Workshop organised in collaboration with the Chandigarh Police.
The event underscored the institute's commitment to ensuring the personal safety and holistic development of its students, particularly young women.
The highlight of the ceremony was the inspirational address delivered by the esteemed Chief Guest, Sh. Praveen Kumar Sinha, IPS, Chief Director Intelligence and Vigilance, Punjab.
Sh. Sinha motivated the newly admitted students, urging them to actively participate in the self-defence training and prioritise personal safety alongside their academic pursuits. He emphasised the importance of social defence in day-to-day life and also motivated students to be aware of their surroundings. He further emphasised the importance of an inquisitive mind and asked students to keep asking 'Why' not only in academics but in day-to-day life for better learning.
The session featured a notable address by the Guest of Honour, C.A. (Dr.) Vikram Nayyar, PU Finance and Development Officer. Dr. Nayyar's remarks were well-received, focusing on the broader aspects of student responsibility and the opportunities available within the academic framework of Panjab University.
Dr. Deepak Kumar Gupta, Principal-cum-Professor of Dr. Harvansh Singh Judge Institute of Dental Sciences & Hospital, expressed his gratitude, stating, "We were deeply honoured by the presence of Sh. Sinha and Dr. Nayyar. His valuable insights, drawn from distinguished service in public safety, provided an immense source of inspiration and significantly enhanced the impact of this crucial initiative."
Self-Defence Workshop Underway
The motivational lecture was integral to the ongoing Self-Defence Training Workshop, which commenced earlier on September 12, 2025. Following the addresses, the dignitaries interacted directly with the Self-Defence Training Team, personally witnessing the students' dedication to learning essential personal security and empowerment techniques. This successful event provides a strong start for the new BDS batch, reinforcing the institute's commitment to ethical values and comprehensive student well-being.
The three-day BDS Orientation Programme from 23rd to 26th September, 2025, at Dr. Harvansh Singh Judge Institute of Dental Sciences & Hospital, Panjab University, was thoughtfully curated to blend academic readiness with personal development and life skills.
On 23rd September, 2025, the orientation was formally inaugurated by Dr. S.P. Singh, Head, Oral Health Sciences Centre, PGIMER, Chandigarh, who addressed the gathering with an inspiring keynote. He encouraged the incoming batch to dedicate themselves to both academic excellence and compassionate patient care, reminding them that dentistry is as much about service as it is about science.
Earlier, the programme began with a warm Welcome Address by Principal Dr. Deepak Kumar Gupta, setting the tone for an enriching journey ahead. Sessions such as "My Journey of 10 Years" by Dr. Kanish and a "Heart-to-Heart" interaction with University Counsellor, Ms. Pulkita, offered valuable insights into professional growth and emotional well-being. The ABHA ID session familiarised students with digital health integration, while a First Aid Workshop by Dr. Rupinder Kaur (CMO, Health Centre) and Dr. Arun Bansal (Sr. Programmer, Panjab University) equipped them with essential emergency response skills.
A Meet and Greet with 2nd Year BDS students fostered peer bonding and eased the transition into dental school life. The programme culminated with the impactful Self-Defence Training Session, "Be Strong, Stay Safe," led by the Chandigarh Police Swayam Team, empowering students with practical strategies for personal safety.
Speaking at the conclusion of the programme, Principal Dr. Deepak Kumar Gupta highlighted that the orientation was not just about familiarising students with academics but also about fostering holistic growth. "Our aim is to nurture not only competent dental professionals but also confident, well-rounded individuals who are prepared for the challenges of life and profession alike," he said.
The programme ended on an enthusiastic note, with students motivated to begin their professional journey with energy, confidence, and a strong foundation for success.
