Mumbai (Anil Bedag): India’s energy sector has entered a transformative phase where the focus is no longer limited to power generation alone. Grid stability, energy storage, and smart distribution systems are now set to define the future direction of the sector. This collective vision emerged strongly at the FICCI Indian Power and Energy Storage Conference 2025 held in New Delhi, which brought together policymakers, regulators, and industry leaders on a common platform.
With an installed capacity exceeding 500 GW, India has become the world’s third-largest power producer. However, the national focus is gradually shifting from surplus capacity to ensuring resilience, reliability, and system stability. Highlighting this transition, Shrikant Nagulapalli, Additional Secretary, Ministry of Power, stated, “India’s energy transition is not only about meeting climate commitments, but also about achieving energy independence and supporting rapid economic growth by 2047.”
Emphasizing the critical role of the distribution sector, Atul Bali noted, “Smart metering and smart grids are driving visible improvements in billing efficiency, revenue realization, and consumer empowerment.”
Addressing system planning challenges, Praveen Gupta underlined the importance of thermal assets, saying, “With the growing share of renewable energy, balanced and flexible operation of thermal power plants has become essential to maintain long-term system stability.”
The conference concluded with a clear consensus that policy reforms, technology-driven solutions, and energy storage-led flexibility will be key to building a stable, future-ready, and resilient energy ecosystem aligned with India’s vision of Developed India @2047.
