Chandigarh, June 27, 2014: Giving inaugural address in a workshop on Digital Eye – Real Time Border Surveillance, the Punjab Governor and Administrator UT Chandigarh, Shivraj V.Patil said that National security of India, its territory and integrity is guarded, and protected by its defence forces.  In their efforts made for this purpose, they are helped and supported by the Para military forces, state police forces and other organisations.  But the heaviest burden for this purpose is born by the defence forces. He said in wars, they are in the fore front.
The Governor said that the international borders between India and other countries are guarded and protected by BSF, ITBF, and Assam Rifles.  In this respect, he said, they play the main role and are in the fore front. He said in difficult situations, they are supported and helped by the defence forces, state police forces and other organizations.  On the borders, on which the conflicts have occurred and there are disputes, the defence forces are in charge of the machinery to protect them, he added.
Patil said the task of guarding the borders is of perpetual nature. He said through the borders, drugs can be smuggled, terrorists can enter, and weapons can be transferred to those who want to create trouble in our country.  So, throughout the years, day and night the forces have to keep vigil on the borders.
Patil further said that in order to guard the interests of the country on the borders, between India and our western neighbor and Bangladesh, fences have been erected. He said the border fences have reduced the number of incidents and criminal activities and casualties caused by the terrorists.  But those who are inclined to continue their criminal activities are trying to adopt new methods of causing harm and damage to the interests of our country and people. He said that is why to become effective, our forces need more manpower, and modern equipment. He said in this respect, the electronic modern gadgets can help us a great deal.  They are being used in some other countries and have produced good results, said Patil.
Speaking on the occasion, Patil further said that, Machines and modern equipments are helping human beings to be more capable to use the natural resources, to handle rough and tough situations in a better manner, to be able to help themselves on the land, in the occasions, and in the skies and space.  He said in this respect, those who are out to create trouble are going to enter into a race to win over their targets and are also likely to use the modern equipments to achieve their nefarious objectives. He said that is why it is necessary to be vigilant and ready to keeping our forces modernized and better equipped for all the time to come.
The Governor further said that in future, there may not be wars and conflicts between the countries, but terrorist activities in future,  with modern concepts and equipments are likely to increase, and cause of damage and fear psychosis and terror.  He said that is why this kind of proxy and hidden war need be taken more seriously and tried to be tackled in many ways, with modern concepts and equipments and weapons. He said that we have erected fences on borders which helped us, but we should take effective steps to strengthen, modernize and adopt new methods, to make them more useful and capable of achieving the required results.
Prominent amongst others who spoke on the occasion included Mahesh Singla, Additional Director General BSF, Jagat Singh, I.G., BSF and Prof. Arun Grover, Vice Chancellor of Punjab University and M.P. Singh, Principal Secretary to Governor, Punjab were present on the occasion.
