Ludhiana, September 02, 2025: Dayanand Medical College & Hospital (DMC&H), Ludhiana, has once again marked a significant achievement in the field of complex surgical care. Department of Obst. & Gynae, successfully performed a major surgery on a 51-year-old woman from Nabha, with abnormal uterine bleeding with a large fibroid with previous 3 surgeries with Class III obesity, weighing 156 kg (BMI of 60).
Operating on a patient of this weight is considered extremely high-risk, as it demands meticulous preoperative planning, specialized equipment, and a coordinated multidisciplinary approach involving anaesthesia, surgical, nursing, and critical care teams. Obese patients face extraordinary challenges at every stage, from difficult airway management, limited surgical access, prolonged operative time, increased chances of wound infections, as well as a higher risk of respiratory problems, blood clots, and delayed recovery.
Dr. Ashima Taneja, Professor & Head, Department of Obst & Gynae & Addl Medical Superintendent explained that the surgery was technically very demanding as the patient’s prior surgical history had led to dense pelvic adhesions. Combined with restricted exposure due to her weight, every step required precise surgical expertise and teamwork. Despite these challenges, the procedure was completed safely. Postoperatively, the patient was closely monitored, given preventive care against blood clots, and supported with critical care management. She recovered smoothly and was discharged in stable condition on the fifth day after surgery.
Congratulating the team, Bipin Gupta, Secretary, DMC&H Managing Society, said that performing such surgeries on patients with excessive weight requires extraordinary skill, preparation, and coordination. He praised Dr. Ashima and her team for their commitment and dedication in achieving this success.
Dr. G.S. Wander, Principal, DMC&H, also appreciated the efforts of the Department of Obstetrics & Gynaecology. He stated that this achievement reflects the institution’s unwavering focus on patient care, clinical excellence, and teamwork. He highlighted that managing a surgery of this complexity not only demands surgical expertise but also the support of a multidisciplinary team, which DMC&H has always prioritized.
This accomplishment once again showcases DMC&H’s commitment to providing advanced treatment with utmost care, even in the most challenging cases. The hospital continues to set new standards in patient care and surgical expertise, reflecting its mission to serve with excellence and compassion.
