Department of Defence and National Security Studies Commemorates Kargil Vijay Diwas with Veteran Panel Discussion and Declamation Competition 

Chandigarh, July 24, 2026: Department of Defence and National Security Studies, Panjab University (PU), Chandigarh in collaboration with Jammu Kashmir Study Centre, and Nimbus Defence Academy, Chandigarh today organised a panel discussion by veterans of the Kargil War and a Declamation Competition to commemorate Kargil Vijay Diwas at the Law Auditorium. 
The event paid tribute to the bravery, valor, and indomitable spirit showcased by the Indian Armed Forces during the Kargil War.
The Chief Guest, PU Vice Chancellor Prof. Renu Vig, in her address, expressed her deep gratitude and respect for the brave soldiers who made the ultimate sacrifice. She urged students to inculcate soldiers' core values in their daily lives to contribute actively to nation building.
Col. P. K. Dhaka remembered Operation Vijay, which was fought on the world's highest battlefield under treacherous weather and harsh terrain conditions. He shared accounts of heroic soldiers whose ultimate sacrifice secured a glorious victory for the nation against all odds.
The second speaker, Wg. Cdr. Vikas (Retd.), elaborated on the pivotal role played by the Indian Air Force during the Kargil War.
Capt. Manish Kumar elaborated on the physical hardships faced by soldiers on the steep peaks of the Himalayas and presented a video clip showcasing their bravery in confronting extreme natural adversities.
Prof. Simrat Kahlon proposed the vote of thanks, emphasising the importance of such events in educating youth about India's military contributions.
Prof. Jaskaran Singh Waraich, Chairperson, Department of Defence and National Security Studies, welcomed the attendees. The stage proceedings were conducted and anchored by Dr. Shaveri Thakur.
In alignment with environmental awareness, a tree plantation drive was also organised around the department in collaboration with the Horticulture Division of PU to enhance the campus' green cover.
In the second half of the day, the final rounds of the declamation competition were held in the auditorium. Students from schools, colleges, and academic institutions across the tricity actively participated. The winners were awarded mementos, certificates, and cash prizes by the organisers.
