Creating a full image of the face from half face-A new forensic study

Chandigarh, November 16, 2015: Face is a unique and important part of human body which distinguishes an individual from large group of people. It has turned out to be the most attractive biometric. In this era of CCTV cameras, the facial identification is done from the comparison of the images based on the scene of crime. In CCTV cameras, most of the times, the complete frontal face is not available, but only a half of the frontal facial pose is detectable. Hence, a computer program was designed, which could generate a complete face from the half frontal profile of the face. The study will certainly help the police and investigating agencies in reconstruction of the face, when half face is usually captured in the CCTV cameras & other surveillance systems for forensic examination. This method may be used by the police in apprehending the perpetrators after reconstructing their full faces.
This novel research was conducted by a PhD student, Paramjit Kaur, a Research Scholar at Centre for Systems Biology & Bioinformatics, Panjab University (PU), Chandigarh under the guidance of Centre for Systems Biology & Bioinformatics, Coordinator, Prof. Suresh K. Sharma and PU Department of Anthropology, Sr. Assistant Professor, Dr. Kewal Krishan.
This research is recently accepted in 68th Annual Conference of American Academy of Forensic Sciences to be held in Las Vegas, USA from February 22 to 27, 2016. Dr. Kewal Krishan would be presenting this research in the forth-coming conference./ (SK Vyas, Jalandhar)
